Universities would be very acceptable and

would accord with the traditional aims of

Hong Kong University. We are, of course, aware

that the Trustees might find a particular

difficulty in approving that form of assistance,

and the British Council has very generously come

to our rescue by offering £1,000 for four scholar-

ships for Chinese students at Hong Kong University.

This will meet the Governor's wishes.

At the same time, as you know from our

discussions, we attach very great value to

establishing an association of the Rhodes Trustees

with Hong Kong University on account of thegreat

contribution this would mean to the Sino-British

function of the University as well as the

advantage and prestige of the students selected to

hold the scholarships. We should accordingly be

deeply grateful if the Rhodes Trustees would still

be willing to confirm the previous offer of a grant

for £1,000 to be spent over the next four or five

years for two Rhodes post-graduate studentships to

be held at Oxford by graduates of Hong Kong

University.

We understand that this would be in

keeping with the general principles of the Rhodes

Trust.

Yours sincerely,

(Sign.co) C. L. J. GENT.
